Buffalo Bills (Sal)
Grade: N/A
No picks in this draft, nor any for 2022 either. Sal works a lot of trades throughout the year, so you’ll have to revisit the approved trades to see where his picks went to. It worked out for him as Sal made the championship game this past season. Team still looks strong, and should be able to compete this year even without the picks. Aaron Rodgers won’t be with the Packers to see this team compete, however.
Miami Dolphins (ferndogE)
Grade: B+
There’s not much to analyze in terms of fern’s first draft in the CDFL. He used one pick after trading his 2nd (2.02) and Jalen Hurts (PHI-QB) in a deal that saw him pick up Nick Bosa (SF-DL), Javon Kinlaw (SF-DL), and Leonard Floyd (LAR-LB). At 1.02, Fern selected Kyle Pitts (ATL-TE). In terms of who he picked, Fern may have got the prize of the draft. Everyone’s excited about Kyle Pitts...well, everyone but Hayden Hurst. He’s in a good set-up. Offensive-minded coach. Solid enough QB. Plays in a dome. Plus…it’s Kyle Pitts. He’s a massive talent. The only thing for Fern is, I believe he could’ve traded down a few slots and gotten him and something else. We’ll never know if SF or someone else would’ve traded up to get him, however. So Fern identified the massive talent that Pitts was and took him at 1.02 instead. MIA’s future is definitely brighter, even if only getting Pitts in this draft.
New England Patriots (Chris S)
Grade: D
Evaluating Chris’ draft starts with understanding that he had a gaping hole at QB to fill. I believe Chris would’ve liked to fill that hole in the draft when it got to his selection at 1.18. However, all five QB’s that would’ve been a candidate to be starters next year were gone by 15. I don’t know if Chris entertained the possibility of trading up to get one of these QB’s. I can’t judge based on that. But I can judge based on the decisions after the last one was chosen at 1.15. Chris entered into a decades long negotiation with CIN to trade 1.18, and pick up CIN 2nd and CIN 3rd 2022, in addition to DEN 1st 2021 (1.23). He then traded 1.23 to pick up Kirk Cousins (MIN-QB) at a $9/1y contract. For negotiations at both picks to total over 30 hours only to come away with Cousins and that contract shouldn’t be hard to see why the grade is what it is. The 2021 2nd was used in conjunction with NE’s 1st and 2nd of 2022 to pick up Khalil Mack (CHI-LB), Will Fuller (MIA-WR), and Quinnen Williams (NYJ-DL). With NE’s 3rd (3.18), Chris selected Zach Davidson (MIN-TE). Not much to say other than a dart throw. It might end up working out, but he is buried on the TE depth chart. But understanding all Chris gave up and what he got in return for his picks just doesn’t excite me going forward with this team. Chris needed to come up with long term assets that weren’t part of the Vikings. However, he did quite the opposite. We’ll see if it works out.
New York Jets (Travis)
Grade: N/A
No picks in this draft. Travis used his 1st for this year to pick up Chase Edmonds (ARI-RB). He’s also made other trades involving 2021 3rd’s and his 2nd’s before last year’s season began. This worked out for Travis last year, as he was the AFC East Champion.
