I’ve always found it odd that we have a cap on contract years. The NFL doesn’t have a cap on them and we try to mirror this league after the NFL. Most teams don’t come that close to hitting the cap, but it seems like a cap would mostly just serve to hamstring a rebuilding team. If you’re rebuilding you’d be more willing to take risks by signing players to longer contracts. Competitive teams would likely still be wary of long term contracts on risky players because a bad signing and ensuing drop would result in a multi year cap penalty. Seems like it would make the league more equitable.
