Week 10 saw the start of division play, and several things played out as expected—others not so much. Let me take you on the ride that was Week 10. First off, as you’ll see, no team in the top-9 lost or moved so much as a single spot. If you think that’s irregular, it is. It simply means that for the first time since I’ve been handling PRs, there is such a clearly defined top-10 that there is very little vacillating or breaking into it at this point. In fact, you’ll see zero movement littered throughout this iteration of these PRs, indicating that teams have very much settled in certain spots because of their consistent play, for the good or bad.
The next bit of information you should know is this: Cecil just shattered the all-time points record of 1903.11 points, set in 2013 by Brooks (KC), by scoring 1988.87 through only 10 weeks. Congratulations to him, and commiseration for the rest of us, as he looks nigh unbeatable right now. He managed to throttle 31st place San Francisco by 85 this week to keep the top spot. Behind him, Jacksonville successfully fended off his biggest division challenger in Houston in comfortable fashion to win the AFC South. Philadelphia almost lost to a familiar upset-minded foe again in Dave’s Redskins, but was able to pull it out in this week’s best matchup—one of the last to be called. In fourth, Pittsburgh survived another scare, this time from Baltimore, for whom Garrett left the door open, but with Josh McCown quarterbacking and several zeroes, Goose’s Ravens were unable to step through. Cincinnati, who Pittsburgh plays a likely winner-take-all division game against this week in the AFC North, destroyed Cleveland by 63 points last week. He stays in 5th.
Buffalo starts the back half of the top-10, after gutting it out down several positions after a Thursday trade imperiled his ability to field a full lineup. As that game was also likely for the division, the Bills’ must win just one more to lock up the AFC East. Carolina eviscerated New Orleans by over 100, and the Vikings took care of the Bears to maintain a one-game NFC North lead. The Jets, despite their loss, stay in 9th. Detroit, who pounded on Green Bay, managed to stay alive in the NFC North race. Houston, whose chance to repeat as AFC South division winner this year ended this week, is the only team to drop out of the top-10, and falls only one spot. Right behind him, the Chargers, who were victimized by an upset-minded Denver Broncos, drops a spot as well.
Oakland, who finally got a little luck despite a lowly scoring total, climbs a spot at unlucky #13. You can’t make this shit up…unless you’re referring to the fact that the number 13 is not in any way, shape, or form unlucky. The Rams climb to their highest power ranking ever under Trey, after he beat Mett in the brother bowl 2018, and virtually assures himself of his first playoff appearance. Tampa Bay drops three spots to middle of the pack after a shocking dismantling at the hands of the Falcons, who showed everyone what they could be when healthy. They increase their playoff likelihood, and rise 6 spots to #23, most in the PRs this week. Dallas grabs a much-needed sound victory over the Giants, and climbs into the 17th spot. Indy stays put after a less-than-impressive win—but a win’s a win. Denver climbs three spots after the aforementioned upset, and Washington experiences no movement after the aforementioned moral victory type of loss to PHI.
Miami was able to win, despite scoring fewer than 78 points, so the Phins stay in 21st. Baltimore plummets six spots after their disastrous effort this week. Each of the bottom nine teams lost, the first six all dropping one spot, and the bottom three staying the same. After this week, we should have a much better picture of the playoff spots, as four teams have already won their divisions, ten teams have already clinched playoff berths, and five teams have already been eliminated. That means four division championships are still up for grabs, and the remaining 17 teams will duke it out over the next two weeks for those six vacant playoff spots. It should be fun.
