Only one week remains, and there is a lot more clarity at the top and the bottom, but the middle of the pack is still by-and-large an unmitigated mess. The Los Angeles Chargers and Carolina clinched their divisions this week, joining Seattle, Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Houston, and Arizona and New Orleans also locked up wild card spots in the NFC. There are still six more spots left and 13 teams that can possibly, eight of whom remain in the AFC.
The top-10 again remained basically unchanged, as only Cincinnati fell out after being upset by Baltimore, with the New York Jets replacing them after jumping 5 spots. The Jets, however, remain one of the middle-tier teams, however, in that they are one of the 12 teams who are within a game of each other (All with 5 or 6 wins) who will determine the back end of the playoff qualifiers depending on some very intricate scenarios. I will publish said scenarios later tonight.
At the bottom, Baltimore moved up after their aforementioned upset victory over Cincinnati, which clinched the #1 pick for Tampa Bay. Congratulations on a successful tanking. Also, Green Bay picked up a surprise victory over a free-falling Chicago, who still ranks below every 4-win team after losing four-straight. The largest climber this week was Washington with a +7, and the biggest faller was New England at -5.
The playoffs begin next week, whether you’re in them or not. You can’t make any more trades, and there aren’t many free agents of value left to pick up, so the best thing you can do for yourself is to set your lineup. As I mentioned above, I will do playoff scenarios in a separate post starting this week and running through the conclusion of the regular season. As always, these rankings were based on the previous week’s PRs, as well as the point totals/results of this week’s games (Which includes teams intentionally or unintentionally throwing games by not setting their lineups).
