Week 9 is through and only three weeks remain in this fantasy football regular season. This week saw perhaps the biggest upset of the year, as previously 2-win Miami toppled the previously undefeated Steelers, dropping them to 2nd place and from the ranks of the last remaining unbeaten. Likewise, Atlanta moved from the ranks of the winless with a victory over San Francisco, leaving Tampa Bay alone in last. And to think, that wasn’t even the most compelling game of the week. That honor would go to the Baltimore-Buffalo game, which stood 118.5-118.47 in favor of Baltimore, with 2 minutes remaining in last night’s game, and with only Matthew Stafford (BAL) and Ty Montgomery (BUF) still playing. And then, up 27-10, the Lions inexplicably passed the ball, which was batted up in the air, and completed…to an offensive lineman…for a loss, dragging BAL back down to 118.34, and losing him the game. You can’t make that stuff up.
The top-10 remained intact once again, proving their dominance over the rest of the league. The middle tier is a quagmire, with all but one team within one game of each other, many of them division foes. It should be fun to watch that play out down the stretch. The bottom has begun to take shape as well, with five 3-win teams and two 2-win teams to go along with two 1-win teams and the defeated Bucs in dead last.
Week 9 though, was again reaffirming to the teams’ rankings as they already existed, which was a big part of why there was so little movement in this week’s PRs (The least I can remember of any week since taking over these at the beginning 2014). So before you go postal after not moving up after a win, or being jumped by someone or staying behind someone who lost, simply consult the Fantrax point rankings. You will find that only a few teams (Nine) are more than 2 spots away from their point rankings as of right now, and only four are more than 3 spots away.
As mentioned above, the top-10 was vastly unchanged, as no team from last week’s PRs ranked in the top-10 fell out, they simply rearranged. Chicago still ranks below every 4-win team, despite being 5-4, as they profile as a 2-3 win team based off of points. Atlanta jumps 2-win team GB with their win, also 2-win NYG. TEN trails NE at 10 despite besting them in points and NE’s terrible week, as NE still got the win, and I find it hard to penalize someone for that. PIT only drops 1 spot because of their dominance this year, though SEA has now taken the league-lead as the top-scorer. The largest climber this week was Detroit with a +7 (So many middle teams lost that I had to find a way to differentiate the dropping off point, and Detroit’s ascension was the answer. Oakland fell the furthest, dropping 4 spots from #5 to #9.
If you still don’t like where you are right now, well, you only have the three division games left. It’s time to make your mark or to start thinking about packing up shop for another year (As the trade deadline is Friday at 11:59 PM ET). I will do playoff scenarios in a separate post starting this week and running through the conclusion of the regular season. As always, these rankings were based on the previous week’s PRs, as well as the point totals/results of this week’s games (Which includes teams intentionally or unintentionally throwing games by not setting their lineups).
