Recently in our LM discussions, the subject of tanking has come up quite often unfortunately. Several teams are intentionally going out of their way not to improve their teams, whether it's failing to cut loose of players who aren't on teams or to make any free agent signings of consequence, it is important to know that we intend to punish those GMs if those trends continue.
It is important to clarify what the difference is in intentionally scamming/gaming the league and just not being good and therefore having no reason to go out of your way to get only marginally better now. Not making free agent signings is optional, especially if you feel the price is too high. The same goes for trades. But not making any moves and continuing to roster players out of the league or at the very end of rosters with no hope for PT is intentionally tanking (and it makes it near impossible for the next GM to field a competitive team when they take over, limiting the appeal of the team to prospective GMs). That just means more workload for the LMs who have to make your teams respectable again before finding new GMs when you inevitably drop out of the league, or find your way into the #1 spot with an ill-gotten pick.
Not logging on to set your lineups and starting players on byes over active players is intentionally tanking. These are things that we've established before as a league (and thankfully we've only rarely had to say this) as against the spirit of the rules and therefore have previously assessed or threatened to assess draft pick penalties (either penalizing the team in question by draft position or forfeiture of picks) in an attempt to suppress intentional tanking. So to be clear, if you leave an position eligible active player on your bench and an inactive player in the lineup and it affects the score/result of your game, you will be penalized. To those teams in question, you know who you are and I will be speaking with you this week. Think of setting your lineup each week and being responsible enough to do so even when you're bad as being part of and a good citizen of this league. Thank you and carry on (and REMEMBER TO SET YOUR LINEUPS!).
